Have you seen a Chief Minister sit in Economy Class? I have.

As Ning and I were lining up to board our flight to Penang on Wednesday afternoon, I spotted a familiar face standing in front of us in the queue. So I whispered to Ning.

Me: Look in front of us. It's Guan Eng.

Ning: Who?

Me: YAB Mr. Lim Guan Eng, the Chief Minister of Penang.

Ning: No lah.

Me: Yes lah! I know how he looks lah. It's the CM lah.

Ning: Takkan CM jalan sorang sorang. If he's the CM, where's the bodyguards and the officers and the rombongan and kaum kerabat?

Me: Tak percaya? Watch and learn.

So I walked up to Yang Amat Berhormat, introduced myself and asked to take a picture. He smiled and obliged.

YAB CM: Hey, I know you! You're Ning Baizura!

Ning: YAB Lim, good afternoon.

YAB CM: Come, come, we take a picture. Vernon, here's my card. Email me the pictures OK.

Me: Definitely, sir.

Ambik kau. CM pun peminat katanya!

Ning and I really felt honoured. But we felt more surprised that the Chief Minister of a state was travelling all by himself like any normal rakyat jelata. But the biggest surprise in store for us was yet to come.

As usual, we sat in First Class. I expected the CM to be seated somewhere in front of us but then I realised he wasn't in First Class. Where did he disappear to???

I popped my head round the curtain that veils First Class and Economy Class and guess who I saw sitting in the front row seat of Economy quietly reading the newspapers?

YAB Mr. Lim, you have my deepest respect. You have made history by being the first Chief Minister in this country to sit in Economy Class whilst in office as Chief Minister. You really mean what you say when you talk about cost-cutting. Sir, you have shown me leadership by example.

Of course I asked permission to take his picture sitting in Economy and he laughed. And I said I'd blogged about it and he laughed some more, and gave permission. Ketua Menteri yang berjiwa rakyat.

Ning was in Penang on Wednesday for a Secretaries' Week show at Berjaya George Town Hotel, themed 'A Batik Evening With Ning'.

The entire ballroom was decorated with batik, right down to the table cloths and napkins and everybody wore batik.

Of course, no one remembered to tell us about the batik theme, and so it wasn't Ning's fault that she only packed a brocade silk outfit.

Yang Amat Berbahagia Toh Puan Datin Seri Majimor Bt. Shariff, wife of the Governor of Penang, was the Guest Of Honour.

After the show, we were famished. So we went to our favourite spot in Penang.

Mamak: Line clear, Ning?

Ning: Line clear, mamak!

Me: Shah, hang orang Penang kan? Apa kata Shah order apa yang patut. Jangan lupa telur ikan OK! Udang jugak. Kita lapar gila babas!

Shah: OK, Mr. Vernon!

This is Sim Bee, a lawyer and a staunch fan living in Penang. Sim Bee very kindly drove us from the hotel to Line Clear in her new four wheel drive!

You might remember Sim Bee from this picture taken on the 31st of January at the Bangsar Mosque :-)

And take a closer look at the guy dressed in pink. Yes, that's Shah, also a huge fan of Ning from Penang. You should check out his blog.

We ate and gossiped and laughed and basically had a good time!

Ning had the roti telur instead of rice. Diet katanya... walaupun satu pinggan ayam goreng habis dibelasah. Lariiii!!!

This was my plate. Telur ikan (my favourite), ayam goreng (out of this world), udang (the size of a baby's arm) and crunchy spiced vegetables. This is REAL food.

And my usual two glasses of iced lemon tea.

Dear Gentle Reader, over 80 of you hollered back and left comments at my previous posting. So sweet. Thank you, guys. Some of you wanted to remain anonymous, and that's OK with me. Please, don't feel shy to leave a comment in any of the posts from now on OK. Macam biasa, comments are all moderated and I'll approve them when I wake up and go online. (Seperti biasa, kehadiran seekor dua lalat buat kacau and I deleted those pests. Why do haters bother to come here and read and then leave nasty comments? Kalau tak suka, jangan masuk dan baca. Tapi, tetap jugak nak masuk dan baca, pastu nak kencing. Get a life and go buzz somewhere else, smelly flies!)

I'm glad that the girls I took pictures with at JW Marriott are delighted that their pics appeared on this blog and you know what? As of today, I'm challenging you, my loyal reader, to send me pictures of yourself! Yes! Why don't you guys take group pictures of yourselves in the office or when you guys are out makan and then send them to me and I'll put them up here. But make sure in the picture you guys hold up a cardboard or A4 sized paper with a greeting on it to me or something lah. That way other readers will believe it's really readers and not just pics I cilok from the net, kan. That would be fun, kan? Email me your pics to mrmanagermail@yahoo.com and I'll post them here and we can all gelak gelak ramai ramai!

In the mean time, enjoy this 'the making of' video of Here In My Home... and see the world premiere of the music video tomorrow night on AIM.

Oh, and if you're at home at 9.30pm tonight, watch AF Extended on Astro RIA 104. Guess who's the guest tonight?

Have a good weekend, guys. Love you all!

Oh yes, Dubai Part III. Monday next week.

Wow,Lim Guan Eng.I'm surprised. To be honest,I was a bit sceptical that he would fulfill all his promises.

Yelah, once u r at the top people say u would not tend to look down anymore but really..

I'm sure u've had a humbling experience with Lim Guan Eng.

He sure is a good example of a good leader.

And I'm still wondering as to why some of the Malays think Lim Guan Eng is a Chinese chauvinist through and through.

Kelas ok CM duduk economy class.

Flying coach by YAB though honorable is merely a feel good factor. Ministers in the UK and New York are known to travel by bus and subway! Anyway THAT should not be YAB's main KPI. Yang penting is that he delivers what he and his compatriots had promised during campaign time.

Will Penang continue to attract foreign investment to spur the state's development?
Will the wealth be properly distributed so that certain minority groups (i.e. the Malays) are not poor and living in current bad conditions?
Will the beaches be cleaned with proper treatment for sewage?
Will there be proper conservation efforts implemented on some of the decaying but grand buildings?

I still want to see these opposition make the transition to statesmen. The recent Parliament debacle has demonstated that they are still the kucing kurap from the alley yang baru masuk rumah!

Hi Vernon! It's been at least a decade since you handed me your card and announced yourself as Ning's manager. Soon after that I emailed you to pass a message to Ning but I never heard back. Funny how the blogosphere has brought us back in on the same page, so to speak. I just want to send Ning a blast of good vibes and a renewal of my profound admiration and affection for that feisty and talented woman. It would be a great delight for me to hear from or bump into Ning again at some point. Trouble is I live in an Orang Asli village 44 miles from KL and hate going to the city these days! (I've been blogging furiously since December 2006 :-)

Excellent story on Guan Eng, cheers!

Perhaps more Malays willing to join DAP?

Yes!that is our new Penang CM, Lim Guan Eng. He is real humble and the photo is the proof, glad Mr Manager took and post in your blog. He is serious in cutting cost and that is his leadership by example! He also doesn't like people to call him YAB or YB but call him as Lim or Guan Eng so he can be close to all rakyat.

I still remember at a recent function, his official car- PG1 broke down when he arrived at the place, he went back by Proton Iswara aeroback to other function.

Anyway, he still stays at his father's house rather than the official house as he didn't want to waste rakyat money by spending RM300,000 to repair the 'bumbung bocor' and other repairs.

Salute to you, Guan Eng and you are our Penang real leader "berjiwa rakyat" !

People can easily be blinded by one occasion of Lim Guan Eng flying on economy class, big deal! On two other occasions I was flying with him in Business Class (Mr Manager, There's no First Class in Penang-KL flight). He took the economy class because there's no more business class seat available, not so much for berjiwa rakyat! and Ning, your charge RM120.00 per head for the dinner for such crap show. Where's the jiwa rakyat from you. You should have donated to charity with such an exorbitant price tag you ask for, but I was told, not a single sen came your fees!

1. You were told not a sen came from Ning? Prove it. (In Islam, donations to charity or the poor should not be publicised or made a big deal of. It should be done quietly. So do not question what Ning does with her fees. Do you know how much she donates on a MONTHLY basis?

2. Exorbitant RM120 per head price tag? Obviously you have no idea. The price tag was charged by the hotel, not Ning.

3. LGE on Business Class? Prove it with a picture, like I proved my story with pictures.

4. Don't be a sissy and hide behind an anonymous comment. Have some balls and put your picture and blog link here if you have any integrity and want to rubbish others.

Mr Manager,

Beyond doubt it is a world-class benchmark of leadership by example. The CM of Penang takes the trophy. Shame on other leaders who preach but do not practice.

But of course, arrogance will be the order of the day as some will argue that the CM's action is cheap publicity.

But the wise rakyat know this man. He is hope re-born. He is the national yardstick for clean leadership.

Wonder whether the MSM will paint the town red with this very positive story? Chances are mana boleh!!

Well done Mr Manager.

I encourage ALL bloggers to publicise this great story of hope, inspiration and examplary conduct. Please give it some intensity and prolonged favor. It could get the doubters to convert for the better - though it looks most remote.

I have not been to jail before. But you know how they feel and especially Lim Guan Eng for going to jail for a cause. That can be the most humble a person can get. Regarding wasting taxpayers' money. Let's start with those local council which have all kinds of beautifying projects yet cannot even solve drainage problems. If not for all the waste of public money for projects (at inflated prices as well) we could be compatible with developed countries by now! Our country is blessed with natural resources, English-speaking population (before the rot) and multi-racial composition. We could have tapped on China and India due to the people's mother tongue language. I guess the best gauge of where we stand is to look at the standard of our football.

That was a good examplary lifestyle by CM Lim. It feels great to be a Malaysian, to be a Penangite after that political tsunami.

Let's altogether hope for a better home, irregardless of race or religion, as we are all affected.

Love Ning for her great showmanship and songs. And thank you Vernon for this blog! :)

Nice blog.
Just to clarify, Many have also seen the previous CM of penang Dr Khor Tsu Koon travel in Airasia (Airasia got only one class eg economic) alone while in power previously.

Once the PKR-DAP-PAS government is in control, after this Ning boleh makan pasir le...hehehe...who wants to pay her RM25000 for half hour singing 5 lousy medley, Guan Eng? He would pay 25sen. Ning is very unprofessional, appears only after 11pm, everybody is sleepy ma...

AND my reply to you is:

hello, with BN lagi terok! i cant sleep peacefully every night takut nanti siapa-siapa tu la pasang C4 on me! i paid for their salary but only to have them put me behind bar dgn alasan "tgh siasat!" ...eiii hello, BODOH, kalo takde evidence, let the innocent off, ok! tak usah duk buat lawak dgn cara siasatan yg lembab tu! i m going to take part and actively involve in the ISA abolishment movement! - this is my pledge!

next, bila kalah election, government BN tu pergi raba-cubit pungkoq tax payer! kang nanti dia tu cubit pungkoq mak engko or silap-silap, pungkoq pak engko tu!

I am very impressed by your blog & thanks for highlighting the fact that Penang's CM flies Economy class! It proves that he is not out to waste Tax-Payers money by flying Business Class on 40-min flight to Penang!
Good on you, Guan Eng!

Hi Vernon!

Thank u for sharing this with the world! yes, I said the world. I bet there are lots of people that are inspired with Eng Guan's story that it moves people. As simple as this write up is, it's such a great moment that highlights the power of leadership by example.
People will gravitate towards a leader who makes leadership a way of life, one that does not live by the hierarchy or position, but rather of service that goes beyond barriers.

I'm featuring this on my page! :)
Thanks.

While it is commendable that Guan ENg flew economy, it might backfire on the poor dude the next time.

No one, not even his harshest critics would deny him the right to fly business class; but when I meant backfire; what if now he flies Business after being seen on economy...his critics would say.." Ahhh, see that didnt last long."

I also read a comment on this on another blog that said: "if he can (as the state) pays for him to travel, he should fly business as he is depriving some poor sod who can only afford to fly economy a place on the flight..."

ex-Special Assistant to Tan Sri Dr Koh said...

HAHA.. LIKE THAT ALSO GOT PUBLICITY? OK HE CHOSE THE RIGHT TIME TO GET POPULAR.. WHILE TAN SRI DR KOH TSU KOON ALWAYS ON THE LAST FLIGHT IN AIR ASIA, SO NEVER GOT PUBLICITY...

TRY TO CALL KENNETH TAN FROM PENANG AIR ASIA AND CHECK ON HOW FREQUENT DR KOH FLY WITH AIR ASIA?? AND ECONOMY CLASS~ IT'S NOTHING NEW~

CHEAP PUBLICITY LA GUAN ENG~

Clarification:

YAB Lim did not orchestrate this chance meeting. He did not ask for his picture to be taken. Therefore, he cannot be accused of seeking cheap publicity.

The responsibility is all mine for taking the picture in the first place and for writing this story.

love this post.

just wanna say something bout ning&hubby's book-dua dunia satu cinta. i went through it few days back in MPH bookstore. shot by well known photographers. very nice pictures. but poor things was, the quality of the book. all the pages were falling off. n it happened to all the books i saw. i think there were 3-4 books. hm. i think u need to do something with it lah. very good contents about ning n her beloved, but very poor quality.

p/s : im now trying to be a 'lalat', but in case you don't know how the books' conditions are right now in the stores, you better go and check it out. n i dont hate ning. =)

This comment is just PATHETIC. If I were a Penang-ite, I'd be happy that my governors are doing their best to save the taxpayers' money, and instead use it for something beneficial for example improving schools, hospitals or libraries.

Wow, great posting! Guan Eng really walk the talk! Well, actually Guan Eng is not the 1st minister who's doing that. Watch for Menteri Besar Kelantan 19yrs-down-to-earth governance...You'll find much more inspirational attitute in him..!

I have copied your blog content about YAB Lim Guan Eng into my latest post. I have stated there that it is not from me but truly yours.

I just wanna share with my friends about how good YAB Lim Guan Eng is [yes the only way is through your photos and blog]. Guess you are the only one who managed to snap his picture in Economy Class.

If its against your rule or disclaimer, let me know... and I will delete it.

Sorry once again.

Dear Ning,

I share your view regarding cost saving. However it would be more meaningful if you or other artist also emulate that by travelling economy class too. Staying at budget hotel and living simple life. This will also save cost for the rakyat who will pay less to see your show. And government too (rakyat money) will pay less or are you willing to charge less to appear on RTM.
